“You mean to tell me that you folks are headed to Lazero Cardenas? Serious?”

Ana and I looked at each other in confused silence. She elbowed me, voicing the concern that we both undoubtedly felt.
“Why does he know about Lazero Cardenas?” she muttered, “I don't think it's much of a tourist destination...for most tourists, at least.”

“I don't know, you tell me,” I muttered through gritted teeth, the heavy rain masking our already muffled conversation. “I've only ever heard of it from you.”
“You've only ever heard of anything from me,” she grumbled back. I was mentally readying a retort when the driver interrupted my thoughts, probably for the best.

“Hello? Y'gonna answer me, or stay puckered up like a pickled fish?”

Neither of us had an answer to that. “Uh....yeah, we are, why do you ask?” said Ana, with suspicion evident in her voice. “I didn't think many people had heard of it.”

“Well, I'd only heard of it when I was assigned to pick you two up 'n take you there, so you're right in sayin' so.”

Ana's mouth hung open in surprise for a moment before responding.
“Excuse me, what? Pick us up? Who told you that?”
The driver glanced over his shoulder at me. “You didn' tell her anything?”  I could do nothing but stare back in confusion.
“Sonofabitch,” muttered the driver. “Scorpion wasn't kidding, you musta got conked worse than I thought.”
I leaned forward, forgetting the damp and my discomfort. “What are you talking about? Do you know me?” He started to answer, but I cut him off, grabbing his shoulder probably too harshly.
Why can't I remember anything?
“And who's this 'Scorpion'?” added Ana distantly.
Silence followed our questions, broken only by the driver muttering“Shit.”
After a few minutes of nothing but pattering rain and windshield wipers, the driver spoke again.
“ 'Fraid I don't have all your answers, but I'll explain things as best I can. Seem's we've got a long drive ahead of us anyway.”
